Propelled by her desire to understand the origins and the evolution of the beloved landscape of her youth, Louise Abbott spent six years exploring the Memphremagog region. She recorded the recollections of long-time permanent or seasonal residents. She consulted biologists, geographers, geologists, and other researchers. She conducted in-depth archival research and amassed hundreds of archival images. She and her co-photographer, Niels Jensen, also photographed the lake and lakeshore from multiple perspectives and created modern-day portrayals of historically documented views. The result of all this work is a richly illustrated two-volume landscape history that begins in the Paleozoic era and continues to the present day. The first volume concentrates on human activities that exploited the fish, game, water, soil, forests, minerals, and other natural resources for subsistence or commerce and thus shaped the Memphremagog region into a “working landscape.”
